  1. Launch Stage

Test Launch and Early Access

A successful product launch requires careful planning and execution. By conducting a test launch and phased early access, you can identify potential issues, gather feedback, and ensure the product is ready for wider adoption. This two-stage approach minimizes risks and allows for iterative improvements before a full-scale release.

Test Launch

  1. Perform a Soft Launch

    • Release the product to a limited audience to identify and resolve issues before full public exposure. There can be multiple phases of access. The first phase should be the most restrictive, then gradually open up to wider audiences. The first test launch should be for staff only, and potentially a small group of the most trusted users. This does not preclude having perform semi-public alpha and beta testing before.

    • Use this phase to test core functionalities and stability. Where possible, consider using automated tools to check capacity and scaling issues. For many projects, there are scaling issues with a web or mobile app and then again with smart contracts. The latter is much harder to scale and speed up.

  2. Review Results

    1. Be sure to review the results of this phase before moving on to the next phase.

Early Access

  1. Phased Release:

    • Begin with a limited audience to test the product’s scalability in a real world setting.

    • Gradually expand access as confidence in the product’s performance increases.

  2. Monitor Metrics and Gather User Feedback:

    • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as server response times, error rates, and user engagement metrics.

    • Analyze user behavior to identify pain points or areas needing improvement. Consider using analytics tools to gather insights and make data-driven decisions.

    • Develop a plan to collect feedback during the phased launch. Use methods like surveys, in-app feedback tools, and social media monitoring. For instance, you could implement a user survey using a simple Google Form, asking participants to rate their experience across categories like ease of use, performance, and overall satisfaction. Incorporating a Net Promoter Score (NPS) question can help gauge user loyalty and pinpoint critical areas for improvement. Consider incentivising user feedback too.

    • Establish a process for prioritizing and implementing user feedback.

    • Iterate on the product based on insights gathered during this phase.

  3. Community Management Strategy:

    • Assign community managers to monitor chat channels, forums, and social media for questions or concerns. Their responsibilities should include identifying recurring issues, escalating technical problems to the appropriate teams, and providing timely updates to the community. Additionally, they can gather insights into common user concerns and ensure that feedback is recorded and acted upon effectively.

    • Engage with users to address issues and provide timely updates.

    • Create a crisis management plan to handle negative feedback or technical issues quickly and effectively.

  4. Scalability Preparation:

    • Evaluate infrastructure needs to handle increasing user demands.

    • Perform stress tests on servers to understand capacity limits and identify potential bottlenecks.

    • Implement auto-scaling solutions to adapt to growing user numbers.

Benefits of a Phased Approach

  • Minimized Risk: A soft launch and phased access reduce the likelihood of major issues affecting a large audience.

  • Improved Product Quality: Iterative improvements based on user feedback result in a more polished and reliable product.

  • Stronger Community Engagement: Early adopters feel valued and are more likely to become advocates for your project.

By carefully planning the test launch and early access phases, you can ensure a smoother rollout and build a stronger foundation for your product’s success. Many of the tasks outlined here are repeated during the full launch, making the test launch an invaluable opportunity to refine and perfect your processes. Treat this phase as iterative practice to ensure a seamless and well-executed public release.
